NLEN: Turning Community Investment into Opportunity in North Lawndale
For more than 25 years, North Lawndale Employment Network (NLEN) has been rooted in North Lawndale, connecting people to employment, economic opportunity, and pathways toward greater financial stability.
Our work begins with a simple belief: talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not.
Every day, NLEN works to help close that gap. Through workforce development, skills training, career coaching, financial education, fair-chance employment opportunities, and our social enterprises, we create pathways for people to move forward—and build stronger futures for themselves, their families, and their community.
A recent U.S. Bank story and video offer a closer look at that work and demonstrate what can happen when long-term partners invest in organizations already deeply rooted in the communities they serve.
Investment That Reaches People
At NLEN, community investment becomes personal.
It is the participant preparing for an interview after experiencing repeated setbacks. It is someone returning home from incarceration who receives a fair chance to rebuild a career. It is a young adult developing new skills and discovering a career path. It is an individual earning a paycheck while gaining the experience and confidence needed to move into permanent employment.
Through Sweet Beginnings and the beelove® café, NLEN also creates paid transitional employment opportunities that allow people to develop workplace skills in a supportive environment while preparing for their next opportunity.
These are the outcomes behind the investment.
And they are possible because NLEN combines the determination and talent of the people we serve with a network of partners committed to creating lasting opportunity in North Lawndale.
Partnerships That Strengthen NLEN’s Work
NLEN’s longstanding relationship with U.S. Bank is one example of what sustained partnership can make possible.
U.S. Bank has invested in NLEN directly while also working with IFF, a Chicago-headquartered Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that provides financing and resources to nonprofits and community organizations throughout the Midwest.
Together, these relationships help ensure that capital reaches organizations like NLEN that are positioned to turn investment into programs, services, employment, and economic opportunity.
As NLEN President and CEO Brenda Palms shared:
“I am incredibly grateful for our partnership with U.S. Bank, not only because they see the good in the people and residents of North Lawndale, but they invest year over year to help improve the quality of life, with us. This is trusted, long, steadfast partnership, and honestly, it doesn’t get better than that.”
For NLEN, that long-term commitment matters. Sustainable community change does not happen through a single investment, program, or moment. It is built through relationships, trust, and a shared commitment to the people and communities we serve.
The Work Continues
NLEN is proud of what we have built in North Lawndale, but our work is far from finished.
We will continue creating pathways to employment, championing fair chances, supporting economic mobility, and developing innovative ways for people to build sustainable futures.
We are grateful for partners like U.S. Bank and IFF who recognize the importance of investing in organizations rooted in the communities they serve, and who understand that the greatest return on community investment can be seen in the opportunities created for people.

Because at NLEN, investment doesn’t stop with an organization. It reaches people.
