FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January, 29th, 2025
Updated January 30th, 2025
UPDATE: The White House and Office of Budget Management announced they were rescinding this executive order yesterday evening. We are continuing to watch this story as it progresses and stand firm in our opposition to these proposed spending cuts.
Yesterday, President Donald Trump and the Federal Office of Budget Management announced an immediate freeze on all federal spending, including federal funds allocated to state programs and approved grants to state and local governments and non-government organizations.
This proposed freeze would impact everything from veterans’ healthcare, Medicaid coverage for millions of Americans, federal funding for youth job readiness programs, and essential nutrition programs such as SNAP and Meals on Wheels.
NLEN joins other nonprofit community-based organizations across Chicago and the United States in expressing our serous concern regarding these proposed cuts. A federal judge has delayed the implementation of these cuts to Monday, February 3rd at 5PM due to litigation brought by state attorney generals and other concerned parties. A unilateral freeze of all federal spending is blatantly illegal, unconstitutional, and imperils the most vulnerable people in our communities. The people we serve already face a significant amount of precarity and unpredictability in their lives – and the people we serve, and the community we are rooted in, deserve better than such widespread and unnecessary precarity.
TAKE ACTION: There are two critical ways to support NLEN and all other organizations facing financial disruptions due to this proposed federal spending freeze:
1. Keep Calm: Don’t panic. NLEN, along with many other nonprofit organizations around the state and country, are working hard to ensure our voices are heard. We are not in this alone. The nonprofit sector is resilient, and we will continue to support our communities and advocate for the resources we need.
2. Contact Your Representative and Senators: Your elected officials work for you and must hear about the devastating impact these cuts pose to everyone – especially the most vulnerable people in America. Use this link to send an email to your member of congress urging them to oppose these severe and unconstitutional spending cuts and work to reinstate this funding.
This is a country that has throughout history risen to defend our most vulnerable. At NLEN we firmly believe that those who work hard should not be poor, and that everyone deserves a quality of life that provides dignity for all.
Your support and advocacy will ensure that we can continue Creating a Community That Works in North Lawndale for years to come.
