North Lawndale is blooming with possibility — and now, that vision is receiving a powerful new boost. The Chicago Department of Planning and Development has awarded the North Lawndale Employment Network a $250,000 Community Development Grant to help bring the Sweet Beginnings Pollinator Pavilion to life, as part of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s $33 million investment in community development projects across the city.
Extending Sweet Beginnings’ impact
The Sweet Beginnings Pollinator Pavilion is an extension of NLEN’s Sweet Beginnings social enterprise, expanding transitional jobs, stackable credentials, and career pathways for people with barriers to employment. The pavilion will connect beelove® production with new hands-on training opportunities in apiculture, horticulture, solar, and green infrastructure, turning long-vacant land into a visible, community-driven investment in North Lawndale’s future.
Green jobs, learning, and eco-tourism
At full capacity, the pavilion will support green careers through transitional jobs and work-based learning aligned with Illinois’ clean energy and climate priorities. An onsite Urban Apiary Learning Center will offer culturally relevant environmental education, intergenerational programming, and wellness activities, while seasonal markets, events, and eco-tourism experiences invite visitors, schools, and partners to experience the beauty and creativity of North Lawndale.

Landscape architecture and site design are led by Darrell, President and CEO of Planning Resources Inc. (PRI), alongside partners such as Lincoln Park Zoo and Elevate, who are helping to expand nature-based learning, green jobs training, and eco-tourism opportunities. Rooted in the wisdom and resilience of North Lawndale, the Sweet Beginnings Pollinator Pavilion reflects NLEN’s mission to create a community that works — where every resident can contribute their gifts, access meaningful work, and enjoy high-quality spaces that reflect collective pride. The project grows directly out of North Lawndale’s Quality of Life vision for more green space, environmental stewardship, and pathways to green jobs in the neighborhood.
